Shaking hands

Uh, great. Had the late shift today, will have morning shift tomorrow.
Feeling totally dead beat included.

This freaked me out today:

An older female patient tried to clear her anus digitally.
Yes, I mean she used her finger to get the feces out.
Without a glove or something.
My colleague shrugged her shoulders and said:
"Well, a lot of old people do it that way."

Note to myself:

• Don't shake hands with old people anymore.

Jeez.. Still feel sick thinking about it.. *shudder*

Seriously?

Ouf.. I'm pretty tired but there's one thing on my mind quite constantly for the last 4 days:

I am in the very lucky position to say, that I love my job.
Seriously.
Of course there are days which are just crazy and stressful and annoying and not worthy to think about twice but whenever I get asked if I don't regret it to work there even though I passed my Abitur (or A-Level or Matura or whatever you call it)
(they seem to believe I "wasted" myself with working as a nurse)
I can say wholeheartedly:
"No, I don't regret it. I never think it is a waste of time to make other people's lives at least a little bit better."

A female patient said that to her husband before she was brought to the operating rooms.
He had tears in his eyes and replied: "Don't you dare to say something like that! We'll get through this, alright?"

I never know what to say in situations like that.

Back to work

Wow, that was a pretty interesting first day so far.

Being back at work includes:

• Swollen, blue/red/violet toe (See: Foot versus ceramic thermo-mug = Foot loses!)

• Funny doctor sleeping on the sofa after working for 24 hours. (Some of the nurses call him Dr. Mumble)

• Grannies suffering from dementia screaming: "I'M SCARED!" "DON'T HURT ME!" "I'M HUNGRY" etc without pausing for hours

•  The everyday madness

Seriously, I missed it somehow!

Found the heart while cleaning and tidying up. So cool, can't stop touching it.

The second pic is my favorite this month.
It's so vibrant! Spring is calling, yay, yay, yay! Yesterday evening it was warm enough to walk outside without jacket, scarf and whatever!

Live from your kitchen table!

Pretty nice, a little jam session while sitting round the kitchen table eating pizza.

Soulfood

For 2 persons you need:

200g Spaghetti (or any other kind of pasta)
50g pine nuts
125g Ricotta cheese
1/2 untreated lemon (you need the paring and the juice)
italian herbs such as basil, rosemary, oregano
salt & pepper

Cook the pasta "al dente" according to the instructions,
roast the pine nuts in a pan (without oil!) slightly until they are slightly brown and smell good.

Peel the paring of the lemon into lemon zests, squeeze the juice out of the lemon.
Chop the herbs into small pieces and stir them with the Ricotta cheese and taste it with some lemon juice and lemon zests.
Add salt and pepper if you like.

Put the pasta on your dishes and add the Ricotta cheese mix, sprinkle the nuts over it and serve it.

Dreams

I had a strange dream last night.

In my dream I worked on the new ward where I will be working soon in real life.
I went into every room and talked with the patients and somehow I offered them to lay down on a very huge bed. "Try it, so you will get used to it." I said in my dream.
I'm not quite sure why they should lay there but it had something to do with taking their fears of dying away..

Pretty creepy, huh? Just what I thought.

We look at it, heads tilt a little.

I: "It looks weird, doesn't it?"
Tiny: "Yeah, pretty much." *touchesitwithherfingertip* "Uh."
I: "Is it real?"
Tiny: "Yup."
I: "Are you serious?!"
Tiny asking the radiologist: "Is it real?"
Radiologist: "Yes, it is. Skeletons like these are super expensive these days, they can cost thousands of euros."

Little old lady - epic swearing!

Did I ever tell you about this old lady in hospital?

She was really,really small, maybe 1,55m (or 5"1) and her weight was at the most 45kg.
"Birdie" she was called by the nurses.
But this lady could swear, oh boy..

My jaw dropped to the floor when something didn't work out the way she wanted.
"Goddammit! What's this again? Shit! That's it!"

She was one of the little old ladies you would expect to say nothing worse than:
"Oh my goodness!"
